I've always been a collector, even when I was a kid. So my favorite place ever to go was this random store named Trends at the mall - they had a pretty big variety of Sanrio & Hello Kitty stuff back in the day and I remember saving up money so I could get to go there and get something - anything Sanrio! Luckily for me, I still have a pretty cool stash of vintage Sanrio/Hello Kitty stuff stowed away for safe keeping and in excellent condition (I was a weird perfectionist - liked my toys to be perfect kinda kid!) If you're hunting for vintage keep an eye out for any Sanrio stuff - there's a lot of collectors out there and some of it fetches some pretty wild prices!

Simple Stitches How To : Open Chain Stitch

So I'm very happy that I've been working on a new special project, my first craft book! (insert a million exclamation marks here) I obviously can't share many details of what I'm working on but I'll try to share what I can along the way and keep you updated. I can tell you that, my book is being published with North Light Books and will be released in 2012. It's going to feature a lot of brand new & interesting projects that I'm so excited to be working on! In fact, I must admit I'm not -the best- secret keeper so not being able to post & share all of these neat new things is going to be so, so difficult!!! A Little Bit of Everything Update

I've been up to a lot lately! I have some new projects coming up that I'm really excited about but can't share yet! I'm still hoping to post the giveaway that I've been meaning to do (hopefully in just a few days) but the past few weeks have been full of distractions! The plus is they've been rather good distractions! Here's a few random neat things:

Won a pretty awesome giveaway on Twitter from @Crafternews, received a ton of neat books!

Received some brand new Eco Felt from Kunin! I'm not sure the new printed Eco Felt by Kunin is available in stores yet so I thought I'd share! It's super fun, I can't wait to try out some new projects with it! It's also super soft, I've seen other printed felt before and well, this new Eco felt is just different! Most I've seen has been almost like a screen print on felt and its rather rough on one side, this new printed Eco felt almost seems woven as it has the same soft felt texture on both the back & printed side. Looking forward to see what other prints come out! I'd love to see some polka dots or ginghams!

I got married! My new hubby Joe & I decided to just go get hitched & just be married, we tied the knot on Feb. 28th! We've been together a long time and well I'm just not one for big parties but don't get me wrong - I'll totally go to your big party, just didn't want to plan one myself!! However, we did a have a super nice family party last weekend to celebrate! Horray!

The folks over at CSNStores.com recently provided me with a $75 gift card to do a shopping review! I decided to keep it crafty and get some organizational goodies for my craft lab & a few other random goodies! Of course, I really wanted to get a handbag, but gee whiz - do I really need another handbag? CSNStores.com has many different sites within their site so if you keep shopping around you'll probably find a specialty shop catering to just what you need! So anyhow, here's what I picked up:


Got a sturdy universal sewing machine case for my little machine! It fit my Brother nicely and was room enough to fit my pedal and extras in the case with it, which was really great! Oh and I should mention, everything came really quickly!!

An ArtBin storage container, which I must confess I haven't used yet but I hope to use it for my more artsy supplies like pencils, markers, & paints! They have a good selection of ArtBin's, it was difficult deciding which one to get!

And more randomly, I got some extra non-stick frying pans by Faberware! They were inexpensive and pretty decent for the price - plus they're red!! Overall the shopping selection was good, the prices were reasonable, & the shipping was fast!

DIY Tutorial : Framed Embroidery Hoops

Hey Friends! Just wanted to share with you today a how-to on Framed Embroidery Hoops! Framed Embroidery Hoops are every where, they make great gifts, wall art, and a perfect way to show off your embroidery! I'm sure most methods are quite similar but I haven't seen anyone back their hoops like I do so I thought I'd teach you how!

Adding a little piece of backing fabric helps to create a little finished piece of art work and it's just a nice detail! Plus it really helps to add some sturdiness to your hoop, especially if you're framing a thinner cotton or making patchwork hoops.

So here we go:

1. After you've finished up the embroidery you plan to hoop, cut a piece of cotton fabric to fit in your hoop, I usually just use my finished embroidery as a guide for size. You don't often find me measuring things! ;) (thinner fabric works best for backing in this method).

2. Place your backing fabric front size down on top of your inner hoop, lay your finished embroidery finished size up on top of your backing fabric, and attach your top hoop.

3. Once you have all your fabrics in place and your hoop tightened down, pull the edges of your backing fabric to get it nice & taunt and then do the same with your embroidered top piece. Tighten down your main hoop once again so everything is snug and in place.

4. Next trim down your backing fabric so that it is level with your inner hoop. Since everything is snug & in place you won't need to glue this fabric down since your outer fabric will hold it in place just fine.

5. Then decide whether you need to trim your top fabric - I like mine to just cover the rim of my hoop but not go all the way down to my backing fabric. I just think it looks neater this way. So trim down your remaining edge so it is about a half inch and enough to go over the edge of your hoop.

6. Time to start gluing! I start from the screw at the top of the hoop and work my way around the circle doing 2 to 3 inches at a time. I like to use good ol' Aleene's Tacky Glue - it's well, very tacky and stays in place great! Be sure you're framing a piece you'd like to stay in the frame because you probably won't be able to remove it easily!

- I like to do a bead of glue on the very edge of the hoop and then a lighter line of glue on the hoop wall - the glue there I spread out with my finger so you get less glue oozing from the bottom. Begin pressing your fabric down and hold in place for several seconds until the glue starts to bond - keep working all the way around your hoop. You may have a few places that pop back up or some larger folds once you finish but just go back around your hoop smoothing things down and holding for a bit longer if necessary.

Voila! You've got a nice little finished framed embroidery hoop.

I do my best to stay on top of current trends but this one totally slipped past me for some reason...I went to Starbucks today (shame on me) and was offered something I just couldn't refuse - a cake pop! I should have been sticking to my New Years diet but there was just something about a 20 inch picture of a cake pop that spoke to me...like corndogs, popsicles, & lollipops some things just work great on sticks! (and well my drink was soy with no whip so it all balanced out!)

Sorry for all the shameless self promotion lately! I hope to get back to regular blog features & add some new & interesting content to the blog soon! I was recently tagged by Petite Hermine for some random facts! I'll be sure to update the post soon so I can pass it along to some other bloggers. It was one of my goals this year to be a little bit more personable on the blog & share a little more, so this is a great way to start!

7 Random (or not so Random) Facts:

1. I collect lots of different things, in small collections, that I will eventually stop collecting to move onto collecting other things. If that makes any sense! Recent small collections: kokeshi dolls & other random wooden dolls & blind box toys.

2. I love art (duh), ancient all the way up to modern & current artists. I minored in art history in college, I don’t care about memorizing facts about art like the exact name of a painting or a particular sub group of a specific movement.

3. I have a black lab, Captain Nibbles and a kitty named Sleepy Kitty.

4. Roseanne is one of my favorite tv shows.

5. I’ve probably said I wanted to dye my hair pink like over a hundred times but I never have, I should probably do it already.

6. Power tools freak me out.

7. I once went to a magic shop in Punxsutawney, PA. They claimed to have souvenirs, they surely did not.

I can't wait for Thanksgiving & Xmas, I have to say I love the holiday season and can't wait for the pig outs & presents! Haven't gotten around to putting up Xmas decorations or the Tree but hopefully soon, maybe this weekend! I have managed to get about 70% of my holiday shopping done & mostly online! Do you do more holiday shopping online or in stores? Everyone says "Oh, I like the atmosphere & decorations, puts me in the holiday mood to shop the stores," personally there's something about that 20 person long line in an overly warm Kohl's that takes the cheer right out of it for me :D! I love online shopping!

Anyhow, I'll be baking it up tomorrow making Pumkpin Bread (Libby's) & Lemon Thyme Bread for Thanksgiving and working on Owl Iphone Cozies to fill the orders that are piling up! (Seriously, that many phone cozies?!) It's so difficult being a one woman show during the holidays, I need some little elves! My arm hurts, for real.

I wish I could get this Turkish Crafty Blogger over here to lend a helping hand! Here's her version of my owl iphone cozies! (And this isn't a diss for copying my work, I actually think its fun & flattering, and really who cares?). Makes me wonder if I shouldn't start selling patterns? I miss coming up with new designs all the time - have sooo many cute things in mind that I never have time for or I make prototypes and they never make it in the shop. Might be a good way for me to get my creative juices flowing again!

Any thoughts out there? Would you be interested in patterns if I started making them? Would you prefer embroidery sheets (a page of fun & random designs) or full projects (softies, cozies, pins, etc.)? I've been seriously considering it lately!

Well now, it has been a super busy Holiday Season so far! I've been steadily trying to add a few new items here & there to the shop, but have been super busy with orders to shops who are busy restocking for the season! I'm doing a small shop update tomorrow and will try to post some new goodies throughout this week!

I've barely started my Xmas shopping! I feel like I haven't left the studio in a month (or two)! How's your holiday season going so far? Done any Xmas shopping??

I made a Big Plush Xmas Tree! This is first large plush anything I've made - I think it turned out pretty cute! It looks even cuter in person (terrible photo, I have the worst light in my house!). It was made for a store window in my hometown, it stands about 4 foot tall. I was going for kind of a modern pennsylvania dutch kinda motif! Tweet Bird Ornaments! These are larger than the pins & keychains, I adore them! I had gotten many requests for the Tweets as ornaments so I decided to do a batch listing for them.

Been making some new plush wall hangings! I love all of these, especially the mushroom house, the inspiration came from a vintage Christmas craft book, better homes & gardens - which is awesome that someone maybe created a bunch of festive mushroom decor for Christmas, complete with little sprites! Sort of funny but nothing like some good whimsical decor!

Wow! I just realized I haven't even had the chance to upload any pictures to flickr in about a month! In fact, I feel like I've barely left the house! Fortunately, I've been swamped with orders that have kept me pretty busy so I've been seriously neglecting my online presence! ha! Anyhow, I hope to update on Etsy in about a week with some brand spankin' new wall hangings and will be adding some new goodies to my wholesale section!

Sweet Tweet Bird Shoe Clips custom made for a special Order! These little birdies are marching all around Switzerland!

Somehow I managed to completely stitch this entire batch of mushrooms and forgot the buttons! Obviously, I was having an oblivious day and paying far to much attention to watching Cake Boss Season 1 on Netflix! I'm awesome!

Have also been getting a ton of orders for Rosettes recently, they're so much fun to make!

A little peek into my crafty office, still need to find the perfect lampshade for that ball canning jar lamp - so hard to find small lampshades - any suggestions? Check out more pictures of my sewing room on Flickr!

PS: What happened to my blog? It used to be purple and now its not, I didn't do anything to it just all the sudden I login and its not purple anymore! Anyhow, I'm so sleepy but it's back to work for me!

My Tips on Taggin' via Meylah Blog!

It was my pleasure to recently collaborate with the very sweet Courtney over at Meylah Blog! I just discovered Meylah blog and found it a very useful resource for those crafters and creatives hoping to increase and grow their businesses. There are tons of tips and great articles by crafters for crafters! Meylah also hosts a group on Flickr that has monthly photo contests so get out there, join, and share your work - May's theme is Mothers Day - and you have a chance to win a $25 prize towards your the next handmade goodie of your choice!

Here's my tips on handmade packaging for your crafty business:

Creating Great Hand Tags for Your Products

You may recognize Jodie from Lova Revolutionary, our winner of April’s photo contest. In reviewing the incredible images she shared with Meylah’s Flickr group, Encounters of the Creative Kind, I noticed Jodie’s amazing product tags and couldn’t resist asking her how they are made, so together we’ve collaborated to outline the tips and tricks she uses to create her stunning tags as we all know they can help you sell more!
Jodie personally creates all of her hand tags. In the beginning, her priority was to keep costs as low as possible. She mentioned "I had to be resourceful, and making my own tags and packaging that were great for my products seemed like the easiest and most cost effective way to go."

In a nutshell, here are the steps Jodie takes to create her beautiful product tags:
1. She designed her logo tag templates (with little experience in graphic design or paper crafting) using fonts and shapes within Microsoft Word, maximizing the available space within each template to get the most tags possible.
2. She prints her templates on cardstock from her home printer.
3. She hand cuts each logo tag.
4. Then she glues (using an Elmer’s glue stick) her logo tags to heavy weight double-sided patterned scrapbooking paper (her favorite brand is American Crafts because it tends to be thick and sturdy).
5. The scrapbooking paper is then cut so there is a nice trim around the original logo tag (she typically gets 7 large tags or 20 small tags out of one sheet of scrapbooking paper).
6. She then edges the corners of each tag with a decorative corner punch.
7. When her tags are finished she uses various sizes of hole punches to affix the pins she makes as well as ribbon for attaching hang tags, leaving the back of tags plain so customers can use them to write a message if they're gift giving or for wholesale buyers to add their own barcodes or pricing.
8. Then, as Jodie says: "PRESTO, all finished!"

Jodie also made some great suggestions for you to consider if you tackle this project:

Keep your eyes out at local discount stores (like Tuesday Morning or Big Lots), occasionally they will get reams of scrapbooking paper at a significant discount over your everyday craft stores.
If you need to incorporate the price on your tags consider handwriting the price in pencil on the back or using stickers with the price that can easily be removed or covered up.
Decoupage glue works well for getting your tags to adhere to shiny or smooth surfaces such as jewelry boxes or jars.
Double thick paper is great for creating sturdier cards and tags.
There are several free fonts available on the web if you want to get creative with your text designs. You can also add photos and graphics to your templates.
Consider keeping elements of your graphics consistent between your store, your tags, your blog, etc. (such as your fonts, logo, and symbols).

Finally, when I asked what tips Jodie had for creating great tags, she replied:
"Make them your own and don't be afraid to try and design something special for your own goodies! People love things that come in sweet little packages! Your packaging is part of your branding and helps to create a cohesive look and completed design for your product. It can help make your product memorable and stand out in a crowd! Last but not least, a little effort goes a long way, your customers will notice and appreciate that little bit of extra work that goes into your packaging!" Lure of a global marketplace has craftspeople competing for shoppers through such sites as Etsy.com, Artfire.com and 1000 Markets.

The online indie craft scene is getting crowded as home-based entrepreneurs move beyond craft fairs or networks of friends to tap customers from around the globe.

Merchants offering handmade items are flocking to online websites such as Etsy, ArtFire and 1000 Markets to find buyers. Etsy said last week that it now has about 400,000 active online shops. They offer items ranging from the kitschy to the sublime.

Most sellers, some who own more than one online store, don't typically make a living from their handiwork, whether that's hand-painted silk scarves or hand-painted cow skulls.

And many find that selling online is tougher than expected. Competition among sellers has grown as more crowd online in response to the increased demand for handmade items. A recent search for "necklace" on Etsy.com, for example, turned up more than 600,000 results.

"It is a great vehicle, but because of so many jewelry shops on there, it's hard," said Eagle Rock jeweler Rose Braunstein, who has an online shop at Etsy.

Yet she and other artisans are drawn to the online marketplaces because of their reach and because the shops are inexpensive and easy to set up. Sites such as Etsy also make it easy to tap into a network of other crafty entrepreneurs for tips and support.

"Right now I have a very small craft empire, but one day I hope to be a very large craft empire" with the help of her online shop, said Erin Korda of Sherman Oaks.

There is no charge to set up a storefront on most sites. Sites make their money in part by charging sellers a percentage of each sale. 1000 Markets, for instance, takes 5.5% plus 50 cents. Etsy charges 3.5% and 20 cents to list an item for four months.

That may not sound like much, but listing fees can add up if sellers follow sites' advice to relist items daily so they show up higher in search results.

A popular site, Etsy has also attracted spoofs such as a Sherman Oaks site Regretsy that makes light of some of its offerings.

No one tracks the sales of handmade or vintage items, but the Craft & Hobby Assn. said consumers spent $27.3 billion on arts and crafts supplies in 2008. That's down 14.5% from 2008.

The interest in handmade goods, which some experts attribute to consumers' reaction to society's over-commercialization, has helped artisans such as jeweler Braunstein.

She quit her day job two years ago to make seed-bead mosaic rings and sterling silver jewelry, which she sells on Etsy, in brick-and-mortar shops and at craft shows.

Etsy, the largest online marketplace for handmade and vintage goods, has had growing pains since its launch in 2005. With the millions of transactions, buyers and sellers find things to complain about, including clunky searching and only bare-bones tools for sellers.

Changes meant to address some of the concerns are afoot at the company that reported gross sales of $180.6 million for 2009, spokesman Adam Brown said. The website's former chief executive, Robert Kalin, 29, who co-founded the company when he was 25 and remains its chairman and major shareholder, returned in December as CEO.

Etsy is hiring engineers to improve its search functions and create new seller tools, Brown said. The private New York company is also hiring customer-service workers as part of its plan to launch phone support this year.

The site works for Karen Koenig of West Los Angeles, who creates frog-skin leather cuff bracelets, among other leather goods, for her Unearthed sites on Etsy, 1000 Markets and ArtFire.

"We aren't Balenciaga," she said, referring to the luxury fashion brand. "But we are paying our bills."

I love doing great big batches of goodies, small cute things just seem even cuter when there's more of them! Have a few more wholesale orders to accomplish this week, then I'll have some free time to do a shop update - looking forward to it! I'll be posting more keychains to the shop, a few ipod cozies, & a few more plush!

Keeping my fingers crossed until later this month - hoping to get into Spring Bada Bing in Richmond, VA. I was really stoked about doing Rock n Shop Market in Raleigh, NC back in Dec but unfortunately got snowed in and couldn't make it! I've yet to do a neat craft show so I'm looking forward to the experience - have my displays ready to go and everything!

***UPDATE: I just found out today that I was accepted for the Spring Bada Bing! Looking forward to RVA for the day and selling cute goodies in real life! ha! (March 19th)

I have a busy few months ahead - it's going to be hectic, looking forward to vacation in June already!
